What is the best tool?

Keyboard/video/mouse (KVM) technology has been a part of the network infrastructure for the past two decades, with the devices evolving into a more expansive role within the data center. When evaluating approaches, analog vs. digital solutions are an important consideration. Before assessing which option is best for you, the following five questions should be asked:

• How large is your organization and which technology is more suited to your data center?
• Will most of server access be done on site or within remote locations?
• What is the total budget of the project?
• Which technologies are more conducive to the network environment?
• What levels of remote access are needed for the organization?

Larger organizations with multiple locations may have more network resources and may benefit from both analog and digital KVM access, whereas small-to-midsize businesses (SMBs) may only need onsite access and therefore require only analog KVM access. For a digital KVM solution to operate at peak performance, significant bandwidth is vital.

Once the assessment has been completed, examine the key criteria for going the analog or digital KVM route. Key criteria for selecting an analog KVM solution include: video resolution; detailed operations, such as on-screen display (OSD) and hot keys; multiplatform support; levels of user-friendliness, including features such as hot-pluggable, keep alive, and emulation; and cabling concerns.

The key criteria to include: security, performance, bandwidth consumption, out-of-band access when network is down and levels of user friendliness.
Analog KVM typically provides the highest levels of video resolution. Since there is a direct connection, via CAT 5 or coax cabling, the video signal is at its peak. Also, since analog KVMs are not affected by network performance, servers can be accessed even if the network is completely down.

Digital KVM solutions offer the benefit of requiring less cabling per rack vs. analog. Digital KVMs ease cable management and save cable costs. The cost savings on cables, however, can be offset by the higher purchase cost of digital KVMs.

Digital KVM solutions also offer access-and-control remote servers from anywhere in the world, outside of the data center. A digital KVM switch must first digitize and compress all KVM analog signals before sending over IP, and then decompress and convert back to analog before presenting to the user. This process requires increased LAN bandwidth and can reduce performance.

Before determining which solution works best, security should be addressed. Digital KVM solutions tend to be more susceptible to security issues than does a direct, analog connection. Many digital KVM solutions have enhanced security schemes, but may still be vulnerable.

On the other hand, analog KVM requires on-site access, which eliminates the possibility of remote hacking. The most important security measure for analog KVM is the restriction of physical access to the KVM, further safeguarded by an authentication process via the on-screen operation menu of the KVM.

Many analog solutions require no software, with computer selection via intuitive hot key combination or OSD menus. On the digital side, determine if you need to install special software or simply access the device through the browser.

Digital and analog KVM solutions both have their merits. The choice depends on your applications and specific network environment.
