Is mathematics and science teacher-upskilling working?

There is a concerted push throughout South Africa to enhance mathematics and science teachers’ skills. But are these interventions being effective?

“With varied success,” according to Charles (Raymond) Smith curriculum planner for mathematics in the Western Cape Education department.

“So much is being done for teachers that is not always translating into results,” Smith stated. When asked what would work Smith’s reply: “Stop teaching for a year and retrain all teachers. The universities and technikons must assist.”

Smith immediately conceded that his heartfelt proposal was impractical, which is why a new product available to mathematics and science teachers who want to help themselves upgrade their skills might be part of the solution.

On offer is a stand-alone CD developed by the MultiChoice Africa Foundation.

Alixe Lowenherz, planner in the Curriculum Development Directorate responsible for ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) integration in schools, arranged an orientation aimed at introducing the Mathematics and Science CD to officials of the WCED (Western Cape Education Department).

Curriculum planners from head office, curriculum advisors and media technology advisors from EMDCs (Education Management Development Centres) and Khanya project facilitators attended the workshop run by Maggi Verster and Mary Mei.

Maggi Verster pointed out that the mathematics resource from Multichoice was free. “I just want it out in schools. I don’t mind whether it’s via the curriculum advisors, Khanya and Dineledi (projects) or directly into a home school in someone’s backyard. I’m excited by this material; it must go out to schools.”

“The Khanya project has undertaken to replicate and distribute the CD to all WCED high schools and ensure that as many teachers as possible would be trained to use it,” explained Lowenherz.

The contents of the CD can also be accessed live via the Multichoice website: www.multichoice.org. In time the CD should be orderable online from the Multichoice website for a small cost.

Jenny Rault-Smith, director of the curriculum for schools identified what was fundamentally at stake: “The product is available. Teachers who want to can get hold of it. So, in the final count the success or otherwise of the MultiChoice initiative will not be determined by access or the medium but, instead, by the commitment of each and every mathematics and science teacher to take the initiative to get hold of this valuable resource and to use it to enhance her or his skills.”
