"Lolita" causes a different kind of controversy
Usage rating

The son of novelist Vladimir Nabokov has sued an Italian woman for parodying the story of a professor sexually obsessed with a 12-year-old girl - from the child's point of view. "Lo's Diary'' by Pia Pera, according to a lawsuit seeking to ban its U.S. publication, is "a ripoff.'' Not quite, says attorney Leon Friedman, who represents New York publisher Farrar, Straus & Giroux. "It's funny, it's a parody. It adds something new, with different characters,'' he said Saturday. The original narrator, Professor Humbert Humbert, becomes Humbert Guibert and he doesn't kill Clare, the evil playwright who lures away Lolita;...

Lolita, by Vladimir Nabokov: A Book Review

Nabokov´s prose captivated me from his very first lines. ("Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul.") The most common reaction from those who saw me reading this book was "Oh my god you´re a pedaphile... that book is about an old man and a little girl". I expected to be repulsed by this book, and although the topic is very disgusting, the story is told so beautifully, so pure, so heart-wrenchingly sad in some parts and so doubled-over-with-laughter funny in other parts that I couldn´t help but love the book. As the narrator warns...

Nabokov and the Bible
Usage rating

It is unlikely that many readers would immediately associate the author of Lolita and Pale Fire with biblical scripture or any of its particular narratives. This, no doubt, is due in large part to Vladimir Nabokov's rather vocal disregard for institutional religion. Nevertheless, this avowedly secular author found significant recourse time and again to images and symbols borrowed directly from the biblical garden narrative in Genesis. Indeed, Nabokov's innumerable Edenic allusions often function quite importantly, albeit subtly, in their respective narratives. Even in his earliest works - from the first years of his poignant, lifelong exile from Soviet...

Vladimir Nabokov (1899-1977) - pen name Vladimir Sirin
Usage rating

Russian-born American novelist, critic, and acknowledged lepidopterist. Nabokov wrote both in Russian and English. His best-known novel, LOLITA (1955), shocked many people but its humor and literary style were praised by critics. The first version of the story, VOLSHEBNIK (The Enchanter), was written in 1939 in Paris. The Enchanter centered on a middle-aged man, who falls in love with a 12-year-old girl and marries her sick, widowed mother to satisfy his erotic desires. He molests the girl in a Riviera hotel while she's asleep, she wakens and he runs into the traffic and dies. "Between the age limits of nine...

The eldest son of Vladimir Dmitrievich Nabokov, he was born in St. Petersburg, Russia. He is noted for his complex plots and clever word play. He gained both fame and notoriety with his novel Lolita (1955) which tells of a grown man's consummated passion for a 12-year-old girl. This and his other novels, particularly Pale Fire (1962) place him in the top rank of novelists of the 20th century. In 2001, Lolita and Pale Fire would both be on the list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century as selected by the editorial board of the American...
