Badminton History
Usage rating

Badminton has a surprisingly long history given its relatively recent introduction onto the Olympic scene. Badminton was invented long ago; its origins date back at least two thousand years to the game of battledore and shuttlecock played in ancient Greece, India and China. Badminton took its name from Badminton House in Gloucestershire, the home of the Duke of Beaufort, where the sport was played in the last century. By coincidence, Gloucestershire is now the base for the International Badminton Federation. Founded in 1934 with nine members - Canada, Denmark, England, France, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales, membership of...

Badminton in the USA

Badminton is a familiar and well-liked sport in the US, but predominantly is a fun game in the back yard or on the beach. We know that once Americans see the other badminton - international badminton, the world's fastest racket sport - they will want more. The Atlanta Olympics started to raise the sport's profile in the US. The event was a sell-out and became one of the "must-see" sports. Ex-President Jimmy Carter, Chelsea Clinton, Princess Anne and Paul Newman were among the celebrities who came to watch. David Broder of the Washington Post also came. After seeing the men's...

Establish a playing schedule. Once or twice a month should suffice. Set up the schedule at the first of the season and have all team members jot down the playing dates on the family calender. This way, family members can easily see when the resident paintballer is going to be playing and family activities can be planned around them. Try not to schedule play dates during long weekends as this is when families like to get together, especially if it is some sort of national holiday. Days like Mother's Day and Father's Day and anniversaries are to be avoided. (Of...

Paintball Security

Paintball gear is very expensive (like I have to tell you). A lot of players have some really neat kit. Unfortunately, some do not want to work for equipment. They decide to steal it, instead. At almost every major event (and on rare occaisons on normal play days at your field) something goes missing. It is a fact of life that there are thieves everywhere, just waiting for a victim to drop their guard long enough to allow the thief to strike. I'm not saying that there are a lot of players who steal equipment or that paintball breeds this...

Recreational Tournaments

Yeah, that's right, I used the "T" word. I know, I know, this is a RECREATIONAL site. Believe me, tournies have a place in recreational paintball. No, I haven't been out in the sun without a hat. Although I have taken a lot of head shots, lately... I know recreational tournaments are fun. I've participated in a couple of recreational tournies. Try and set your prejudices aside for a moment (if I can, YOU can) and read on with an open mind. Tournies are not a bad thing. They're just a different facet of the game of paintball as a...

Scenario Games

I have been playing in Large format Games for ten years now. I thought I'd pass on what I learned the hard way, so you won't have to go through the same agony as I did. (Ain't I a prince?) To simplify things, let's say there are four types of Large Format Games (LFG for short). There are other types but they are largely modifications to one of the four basic types of LFG: Big Games, Simple Scenario Games, Complex Scenario Games and Mission Oriented Games. Each have their own unique characteristics, but share many common denominators. Knowing the differences...

Okay, here's the secret for this one. If you are sure that you know where your opponent is moving to, shoot at that place. For instance, there are two bunkers in front of you. Your opponent is moving from the bunker on your left to the bunker on your right. You should shoot at the right bunker as if the opponent is peeking out of the left side of that bunker. What you are doing is making your opponent run into your paint. You may not have time to lead your opponent as he moves, so you must use his...

The length of the shoulder stock is crucial. If you have a back bottle or bottom line constant air tank, there is little adjusting to be done. You can make it longer, but you can't make it shorter. There are aftermarket, adjustable stocks, that screw into the ASA adaptor. However, they are dependant on you having a vertical bottle, or setting up a remote system. With the thought of extra expenditures, getting one is up to you. Anyhow, the ideal stock length is very easy to determine. Bend your arm at the elbow, putting your forearm ninety degrees to your...

How to Assess Your Opponents

Again, most people will tell you to look at their harnesses for wear and paint stains. This is good, but limited. Check out their loader pots in their harness. If you've been playing for a while, you'll eventually lose one or two loaders. Look for a mix of old AND new loaders. Players may get new hoppers for their paintmarkers, but a loader can be used for almost any hopper on any paintmarker. They'll keep the loaders, no matter how many new hoppers they have. Are they bragging about past glories? Are they regaling their friends with amazing tales of...
