Coho On The Fly

By Daryl Martens

With the exception of steelhead, nothing beats coho on the fly. Often, fly fishing coho is very effective. This isn’t always the case, canyon pools, pocket water and deep fast runs are best left for more standard methods. For example the lower portions of the Chehalis, Vedder, Harrison, Nicolmen, Nicomekl, Kanaka, Alouette, and the Capilano make for ideal-near perfect fly water.

As far as gear is concerned most trout outfits will suffice. Even a 5 or 6 weight fly rod will handle a silver salmon though a 7 or 8 is more suitable. Keep in mind most coho are on the small side, 3 - 5 pounds is the norm for our local rivers. The only problem with fishing lighter gear is that it may be stressful on larger wild coho (Northerns) and it also makes it more difficult to land the occasional spring and chum salmon you’re bound to catch.

As for fly lines, one of these would effectively cover most situations. Jim Teeny mini tips, Scientific Anglers or Cortland Type III sink tips or the “Slime line” a monocore line made by S.A. which is enjoyable to cast and seems to find that ideal water level in our local backwaters. On the down side, these slime lines do tend to retain some line memory in colder weather. I myself prefer a medium-fast sink tip followed by a short leader of 6 or 8 lbs. tippet -- Maxima of course being the most resilient. I’ve tried other tippet materials but always end up going back to Maxima (for salmon anyway).

Silvers are picky when it comes to your selection of flies. At least I’m convinced that the fly pattern does make a difference. There is an old adage: Bright day, bright fly, dark day, dark fly. It couldn’t be more true when it comes to coho. The most effective fly I know is Barry Thornton’s Silver Thorn, especially on bright sunny days. Tom Murray’s rolled muddler minnow probably accounts for more coho landed than any other pattern. A few others to try would be Beadhead muddlers, Egg and Eye’s, Woolly buggers (black, purple, olive, chartreuse, with or without a bead head), Black Spratleys and Christmas trees.

Fly fishing equipment has come to the point where we can pretty much fish any and all types of water, no matter how fast and deep the run may be. Even so the type of water most sought after would be the brackish slow moving sloughs (often referred to as “frog water” by the fly and mepps crowd). Beaver ponds, settling ponds, canals, back channels and so on . . . coho love milling about in this type of water. For the most part these salmon cruise about mid-depth which is where you want to present your fly. In faster currents coho will hang mere inches off the bottom. Experiment with different rates of retrieves.

It’s reasonable to expect good numbers of fish in our local streams by Oct. 1. With the exception of the Capilano River, the Vedder/Chilliwack system receives the earliest runs. On a normal year with proper water conditions, coho will start showing up by the first week of September. By mid-October, the large chinook will have moved in, making coho fishing difficult. The rivers on the north side of the Fraser tend to receive later runs. The runs start tapering off by the third week of November. Being somewhat of a die-hard, I’ll continue to chase these fish right ‘til Christmas, at times with surprising results. For the most part, December coho fishing consists of dark fish only. On the Chehalis, the salmon fishery will continue right into steelhead season.

Take your fly rod out this fall and give it a try. True, good fly water can be a little more difficult to find. It’s worth the effort though. At the very least, you’ll run across fewer people.
