During July 1952 a massive build up of sightings occurred in the United States. The sheer number of sightings caused the Military of the time much concern as the reports were 'clogging' up vital communication links throughout the land.

On the night of 19/20th July UFO's were sighted all over Washington DC by both ground civilians as well as several pilots. All the objects were tracked on radar at Andrews AFB, as well as at Air Traffic Control Center, Washington National Airport.

Many photographs were taken and these were seen in the national newspapers the following day. Further sightings occurred over Washington on the 26th July and again the objects were reported by both ground and air crews.

The 'official' Air Force comment was that all the sightings had been caused by an 'unusual' temperature inversion!.

Through the FOIA a FBI memo written a few days after the sightings had died down regarding research into the sightings stated.
"...advised that the objects sighted may possibly be from another planet...but that at the present time there is nothing to substantiate this theory but the possibility is not being overlooked. He stated that Air Intelligence is fairly certain that these objects are not ships or missiles from another nation in this world. Commander Boyd advised that intense research is being carried out by Air Intelligence, and at the present time when credible reporting of sightings are received, the Air Force is attempting in each instance to send up jet interceptor planes in order to obtain a better view of this objects".

Did they really need to send jets up to view 'temperature inversions'!!!
